Of the many movements our collective trip to Wakanda has inspired, a move toward a wardrobe full of African pride is one of the more exciting ones. There were so many outfits I wanted to steal from the Black Panther lookbook: Okoye, Nakia, and T’Challa’s fashionable nod to Pan-Africanism in the casino scene, Agent Ross’s monochromatic dashiki-hospital gown, King T’Challa’s press conference look with that glorious scarf draped over his shoulder—all in my top 5. But the one look I wanted to snatch up on the spot? Erik “Killmonger” Stevens’s museum-heisting look.
I loved this outfit for several reasons but mainly—knowing what we now know about Killmonger—it was such an interesting way to introduce this character. In the wide-shot, it’d be easy for us assume Killmonger is of a gangsta-villain variety. But upon closer inspection there are small elements—a sherpa-lined jacket, an African beaded necklace, a pair of smart-looking specs, and combat boots—that speak to his complexity as a character.
I may not share in all of Killmonger’s ideals, but I can certainly get on board with this look. I did some research and pulled together this outfit below—dressed up or dressed down, with some accessories our Wakandan ancestors would approve of.
